Flea Market Finds

Our Poppy has moved into a Aged Care Facility so there were a few vintagey 'treasures' to be saved from the trailer heading to 'Vinnies'.

 

This cupboard was Hubby's Mother's (Kath) and it used to live under the house, in the dark, full of OMO and Nappy San.

I am sure Kath is having a laugh because her crazy Daughter-in-Law is now using it as a highly visible furniture piece.

My initial thought was to paint it up and make it all pretty but to be honest, I am likin' it as is.

 I would say Hubby's Grandfather would have made this little cupboard as he was a Carpenter.

Poppy used to use this 'Recession glass' bowl for his car keys and bits and pieces.

The gorgeous old photo is of Kath (right) and her sisters, Mavis and Col.

Very very cute.

Col doesn't look like she is letting go of that ball for anyone.

Last, but not least, a great 70's cassette case full of cassettes.

Very cute and still very usable (not sure for what as yet).

Flea Market finds

I popped into my favourite 'Vinnies' the other day on my way to the Quilt shop.

I couldn't leave behind this unusual, little bit 'kitschy' apron.

I have never seen anything like it before and I was quite taken by its 'uniqueness'.

I must say it is a bit hard to imagine wiping dirty greasy kitchen hands on these gorgeous white butterflies, isn't it?

I also picked up a couple of metres of 'old fashioned' gingham. It is much better quality than today's gingham from Spotlight.

Sometimes it is hard not to wonder about the stories behind some of the things you find in thrift shops isn't it??
Did the lady who made this apron use a pattern or make it up??
Why did her family not keep it as a 'momento' of her craftiness??

Questions I will never know the answer to I guess... 

I think it is a nice tribute to stop and think about these things for a wee while.

Flea Market finds

I popped into a thrift shop after work one day last week.

This particular thrift shop often has 'vintage' fabric in it.

I was once told that you can tell the age of some fabric by its width.

Fabric these days is 110cm wide whereas older fabric is only 90cm wide.

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong about this.

So I picked up several metres of this vibrant (90cm wide) daisy and rose fabric.

The daisies tend to 'outdo' the roses in this print, but I think the roses are rather lovely.

I also came across this crocheted cat in my favourite colour.

For 50cents I couldn't leave him behind.

I am really not sure what he was made for but I have popped him into the kitchen with the pen and notebook so he now looks rather 'functional'.

Flea Market finds

I didn't set out this week to go to any thrift shops.

However, I seemed to have 'stumbled' into a couple this week because I was either:  dropping off donations or in a very close vicinity to an op shop and curiosity got the better of me.

 A $2 Granny square blanket.

I love the uncoordinating colours that have probably been used by a crocheter of the older generation. She has more than likely grabbed whatever is in her stash.

 A lovely nylon teapot cosy.

A great colour combo..

 Now this is the find of all finds.

This beautiful handmade fully lined frock.

We all agreed in the op shop that the fabric was more than likely silk.

If it isn't silk it is a good copy of silk. It feels amaazing!

I have plans of having this shortened to just below the knee.

 Finally, a lovely doily not to be left behind....

Not a bad haul for someone who had a new year's resolution of staying out of thrift shops......?....

Back from holidays and some Flea Market Finds

Gosh I think I lost my blogging 'mojo' on holidays.

It seemed totally wrong to be blogging about happy holidays when there was such tragedy occurring in our home city.

After I finish wading through the 'post-camping' washing and getting the kids back off to school I am getting into some sewing for the flood victims.

Corrie from Retromummy has set up "Quilts for Queensland" which is a wonderful effort. She is one busy mother of (4) so if you can help her in any way please do.

You can make a quilt block; a whole quilt; quilt the finished products; or just donate supplies.

A handmade quilt is a special thing to give to someone who has suffered such losses.

My ADD craft brain doesn't know where to start---quilts or dolls???

I came across this lovely barkcloth dress at an Antique shop (bit like the Woolloongabba Antique Centre set up) at Miami. 

The stall owner told me it was from the 70's and that it came from New York! 

She has a seller in New York that sends her trunks of this sort of old clothing from around America. 

I believe (or fantasise) this gorgeous dress was owned by a gorgeous 'Betty White' type who used to live in Florida. She used to wear it to afternoon drinks by the pool, sipping 'pink flamingos'.

We did a day trip to Tamborine mountain on holidays and in a cute little antique/ collectibles shop I dug around and found this mint condition single bed bedspread from the 70's. 

I am not sure what this will become yet, the creative thinking cap is on.

I hope there wasn't to many tears around Brisbane.

My three are back tomorrow, so we are last minute book shopping and book covering today.

Nothing like leaving it to the last minute.
